Why did Brutus try to kill Mrs. Brisby in the rosebush?!?

Mr. Ages made it look like he was a nice guard rat, trying to do his job. If that's true, then why was he swinging his spear at Mrs. Brisby, like a homicidal maniac?! o_0 She looked very harmless, it's not like she was going to do something evil.

If someone was treating me like that, I'd never forgive them!

He was just young and overzealous. He was clearly just trying to scare her away, and when she didn't take the hint he started getting more aggressive. Notice how he didn't even chase her more than a few feet before he turns around satisfied she's leaving?

This might be crazy but I thought Brutus was "guiding" Brisby. I mean right where she ends up, she meets Mr Ages, and it seems like a different area from the entrance. Did I miss something? Did she just end up back where she started?

I don't know. How would he know that she would jump or dodge his spear? Maybe there is more in the book about this.

Brutus has a larger role in the book, yes.

Brutus was not described as being so sinister looking in the book. He did not carry a spear and he even talked to Mrs. Brisby. Brutus pretty much told her to go away in the book.

Right, in the book the exchange between Brutus and Mrs. Frisby was with dialogue; Brutus was a bit of a douche, lol. On her way out of the rosebush Mrs. Frisby met Mr. Ages, but instead of getting aggravated with her (he wasn't an old curmudgeon like he was in the movie) he listened to her plight, encouraged her, and told her he would talk to Brutus, who is still a young naive rat.

But I do think the exchange between Mrs. Brisby and Mr. Ages in the movie is funny:
Brisby: "Wh-what about that large rat at the entrance? I can't go back there--I can't."
Ages (Waving his hand nonchalantly): "Oh, that's just Brutus."
