i so totally agree!!! i've always had a thing for Justin, but i always wanted him to get together with Mrs. Brisby. i wrote fanfics about them getting together. (in case you want to read them, they're at fanfiction.net. they're called "A Conversation Between Justin and Mrs. Brisby" and "They All Saw It Coming") and they have plenty of chemistry in the book too. i could tell you all about it, but what fun would there be in that? but if you do go and read it, prepare for a very sad and bitter (and rather infuriating) ending.

for those of you who would argue that Justin is impressed because she's Johnathan's widow, Johnathan being something of a hero, and that Mrs. Brisby is impressed because Justin's captain of the guard, and that's the only thing between them, take a look at the movie. when we first meet Justin (and before he's introduced to Mrs. Brisby) watch his face and listen to his voice when he says "who may i ask?" his entire being oozes attraction. then, a moment later, when their faces are only about an inch apart, listen to Mrs. Brisby's voice when she says "how beautiful." she seems to be talking to herself. Justin says "ma'am?" and she replies "oh, the lights. they're quite lovely." a good cover, but i'm sorry, it seemed a tad rushed and flustered to me. than later on, when they're exiting the elevator, she's apologizing for coming at a bad time; Justin comes back with "no, sweet lady, you are welcome here." (watch Mr. Ages in the background, when Justin says 'sweet lady' he stops and turns around.) then Justin laughs and says "we tend to take ourselves a little too seriously." innocent, right? wrong! between Justin's two lines, watch his eyes...they slide over to glance at Mr. Ages. his face, also, has an expression of 'oops' for about half a second before saying his second line. the laugh, also, sounds a little nervous. even later, toward the end of the movie, Justin and jenner are fighting (who can forget that amazing sequence?) and there's a moment where it seems jenner might win. Justin's in the mud, jenner's climbing down the rocks. jenner says "he wanted to destroy evreything!" the scene flashes to Mrs. Brisby, who has her fists pressed to her mouth; her eyes are wide with horror, and she's shaking her head quite violently side to side. then the scene goes back to jenner and Justin in time for the famous "i've learned this much...take what you can, when you can." "then you've learned nothing!"

"No, sweet lady, you are welcome here." - Justin

agreed completely! i, too, had quite a thing for justin and always thought that he and mrs. brisby belonged together. there was definitely chemistry between the two in the movie.

Actually I don't think the book suggests much of anything between Frisby and Justin, and most of the passages regarding Justin could be taken as attempts to build sympathy for him since the author wants to at least suspect he is killed at the end. I'm not saying it isn't possible to read anything you want to into this book, but I think you'd be hard pressed to find any lines that give any solid evidence either for or against any sort of 'romantic feelings' between Frisby and Justin.

In the film however, I completely agree, it seems the makers want to suggest some sort of chemistry between the two (though I doubt any sort of romance.)

Car rats and mice even be together? Is it even possiable?

reply

Sure. Like a dog *beep* a cat. A rod can go into any appropriately sized hole.

In the end, Okonkwo threw the Cat.

When I was a kid I always wanted them to be together. It was sad when they didn't.

It's funny how the colors of the real world only seem really real when you viddy them on the screen

As a kid and now, I wish they had ended up together. I mean, she still needed to mourn her husband, and they left the movie open for interpretation--she gave Justin the amulet and said they would visit the rats again someday. Maybe that someday would be a time something could happen. Although, Mrs. Brisby will have aged and Justin will have not. They definitely had chemistry.

I have never read the book (shoddy school system, I suppose) but I now fully intend to after watching it for the first time in ages and finding out how different the ending is from the film. I look forward to learning more about Justin.

Yes, I agree. It's a shame the movie dropped the ball with that. It was obvious they were attracted to each other and it wouldn't have upset the flow if there had been some dialogue added to explore that more.

I'm so glad they didn't end up together. The reason Justin was so infatuated with Brisby was because she was Johnathan's wife. Plus Mrs. Brisby loved and cared too much for Johnathan to have a desire to be with anyone else. They had chemistry but it wasn't meant to be taken at a romantic level. The whole "visiting the rats in Thorn Valley someday" thing was because Brisby wanted to remain connected to them. And after they helped move her home and she drugged Dragon, helping them leave the rose bush, why wouldn't she want them in her life? Justin and Brisby were friends, nothing more. I think you're all reading into their chemistry too much.

Even as an 8 year old child I felt the sexual tention between those two ! lol

I thought it seemed like Justin was a bit of a flirt and Brisby was probably a little charmed by him, but she also probably had never been flirted like that before by anybody besides her husband. I never interpreted there being anything permanent or serious about their flirtations. It would be out of character for Justin to give up on the rats to stay with Frisby, as well as cliche

"Cliche" is right. I'm glad they didn't get together at the end, although I agree there was obviously some romantic chemistry between the two. I've always liked the love stories where things eventually don't work out, so I prefer them being attracted to each other but going on with their own lives.

One thing I love about this movie is the subtle lesson/theme about how to be a gentleman. In the beginning Jeremy and Brisby go on about how he needs to improve his manner to win over a girl. Later his bumbling nature is contrasted with Justin's suavity. You also see flashbacks of Brisby's late husband to see how heroic he was. As a kid I learned how to be a man from this film.

I was surprised as a kid that they didn't a figured they would in a sequel, but since they never did one (let me have this), I still find it a refreshing ending. It's nice to show that love doesn't always mean ending up together. That Disney expectation really brainwashed the heck out of us growing up.
