question about vernacular

Before arriving at Porky's for the first time, Mickey stops in front of the Wallacetown Sheriff station and refers to them as Porky's "Storm troopers".
Was 'storm trooper' a common term (like meaning henchmen) in the '50s? I'd never heard the term before Star Wars, and obviously that came out way after this movie takes place.

The term "storm troopers" dates back to WWII, and it has nothing to do with "henchmen". It means exactly what it says - troops who come "storming through" an area, overcoming everything in their path. Imagine 1930's-40's German shock troops, and the Blitzkrieg style of warfare. The expression "jack booted thugs" - also known as JBT - comes from roughly that same era and experience. Although both terms are still used today.

I know they don't teach about Korea and Vietnam in history classes in school anymore, but don't they teach about the Nazi's and WWII either? That makes me sad.

Thanks for history lesson cuz I didn't even realize they said that statement till OP posted this. Honestly would have perhaps asked same question cuz I only recall it from Star Wars saga and sadly I'm not that young but obviously our Schools never taught us those terms or if they did I missed em.

All correct except it was actually late WWI (March, 1915) when the Germans created Sturmtruppen (assault troops) to try and break the stalemate of trench warfare. The idea was for fast moving assaults to overwhelm allied trenches, but the name Blitzkrieg (Lightning War) wouldn't be coined until 1939 by western journalists to describe Germany's armor led invasion of Poland, which was the start of WWII in Europe.

Shortly after WWI (1919) Ernst Röhm created the SA Sturmabteilung (Storm Detachment) as the paramilitary arm of the DAP (German Worker's Party) that later evolved into the Nazi Party. Later still (1934), after Röhm's assassination, the Sturmabteilung was folded into Adolf Hitler's SS Schutzstaffel but they left the name 'Storm Troopers' behind because it had become associated with 'thugs' and 'henchmen'. Hitler wanted the SS to have a cleaner, more professional, public image. During WWII the SS was attached to, but not actually a part of, the regular German Army. By then the name 'Storm Troopers' was long gone except in a derogatory sense.

La Bunny--

Take it from someone who remembers--they MIGHT teach it--but nobody really pays attention--our schools are a joke.

Yeah, they're really dropping the ball by not teaching every child about the origins of storm troopers. I for one will be petitioning the local schools in my district to drop science and math so the history of storm trooping will be given the attention and respect it deserves.

Thank you for saying it, Bob, so I didn't have to.

My gosh, people, your high school history class cannot cover every random thing. In fact, covering every random thing it what makes history so "boring" to everyone while they're sitting in the class. Sure, when you're 30 it all starts to come together and get interesting; but until then it's just boring memorization.

Your history teacher should be teaching you the skills involved in pursuing an interest once you have one, ie. stormtroopers: where did the term some from? The IMDB message board is probably not the first place to research, but someone actually did a good job explaining it; someone who researched it out of interest, I'm sure, and probably did not have it crammed down his throat in a high school history classroom.

I remember learning about the Whiskey rebellion in history. I think that really should take a back seat to storm troopers and racial purification.

Science and math without history leads to atom bombs and biological weapons.

History is important since it actually gives us moral relativism. If all you remember is random things then the problem is the teacher not the class.
