very suprising given how big the film was at the time and how good the cast were.

The problem, at least according to some of the actors, was typecasting. A lot of them couldn't get work.

I have to disagree with your thread title. Besides Kim, both Alex Karras & Susan Clark went on to star in the TV show Webster the next year. And Boyd Gaines, who played Coach Brackett, has won 4 Tonys.
Yes - Boyd Gaines was practically unrecognisable as the nerdy Lieutenant in Heartbreak Ridge. A very different character to the gym coach in Porkys, and possibly evidence of his versatility.
