My guess is that she's female and the joke is more for men. Or maybe she just kept her eyes focused on Principal Carter. Remember, they weren't really laughing that hard until that end of the scene and that's when she got up and left. Still, to this day, I think that's one of the top 5 funniest scenes of all time.

reply

My explanation: her shots were probably shot separately for the purpose, either that or they did the scene so many times that the jokes were no longer funny

Agreed.

Oh, yeah! For sure, are you kidding me? No contest in the top five for sure. I cannot recall having ever laughed so hard at a scene in a movie. I've seen movies with more jokes. But never a joke that was quite as funny as that one. Freakin' legendary.

reply

Nancy Parsons, who played the role, I guess knew how to do that.

reply

It's called acting.

I thought I saw an out-take somewhere where they keep trying to keep straight faces and she loses it along with everyone else in the scene. Multi takes.

reply

That was the first take of the scene. They pretty much had it at the first take. No pick ups were shot at all. They did one more take after that but went with the first one for the film.

the movie itself is ok... somewhat better than average... BUT... the scene you are referring to (and the one involving a kim cattral making a lot of noise in the gym laundry room) are indeed two of the funniest scenes i have ever seen..

I remember the first time i saw the one this thread is about... and i literally stated laughing so hard i was laugh-crying (and we all know what that is).. i could not stop laughing for minutes...

and is entirely because of how deadpan they are until the end (excellent acting)... and then you just have to laugh with them... :)

I rewatched the scene today. It was on HD TV so I had a nice and clear 1080p picture. You can see that she's trying VERY hard not to laugh. You can clearly see her crack a smile 3 times. The 3rd time she smiles she almost looses it. So, she closes her eyes and forces her self to frown. That just managed to save her because that was right before she got to walk off camera. I'm sure the second she walked off camera she erupted into a laughing fit.

reply

Heee, I thought that her screwed up frown face was partly there to cover up a smile. It's the one I need to pull when I'm trying to tell kids off for doing something stupid but really, really funny :)

I had that experience once. When I was still doing sub work in the local school district I was sent to this continuation jr high. One kid kept bugging me to let him blow up a condom. I told him no and next thing I knew when my back was turned there was a balloon condom bouncing around the classroom. I wrote out a referral which I sent with him to the Asst Principal. It was all I could do to keep a straight face till he was outside. Then i lost it. Afterwards leaving the school I was still laughing. When the staff asked what was up I told them. He had told them he embarrassed the daylights out of me.Not a chance.

How did she??? How did he might be a better question. Can you imagine sitting across from that hideous thing talking about tallywhackers?

This will be the high point of my day; it's all downhill from here.
