wow man... movies must really suck for you. you focus on the actors instead of the film. before this pic, i just knew berlzer as a comic... he did his job well in this role... winkler was good as the focal point and keaton made the film and his career with this one. i knew him then only as a t.v. comic.
ron howard is not gritty, but ron howard churns out entertaining films, most of the time... this was not meant to be a gritty film.
maybe you need tarentino to do the remake, i like this film for what it is. your conclusion is just your opinion, don't watch it again. shelly long should be prouder of this movie than most on her resume, in my opinion.

I agree...sometimes you have to go against the grain and put someone in a role they're not used to. They did the same thing in "Stargate" when they cast James Spader (quintessential 80's hotshot jerk) as the nerdy scientist. It was great to see Fonzie playing a dweeb.
However, Michael Keaton should've stuck with the ridiculous smart-a** comedy. That's great stuff.
I'm sorry stegosaurus, but don't bash Vin Diesel or the Rock. I agree on everything else you said, but the Rock(Be cool compared to Walking Tall) does not play the same roll in all his movies nor does Vin Diesel.(Riddick compared to a man apart) But I also like to see actors play a variety of roles (Johnny Depp) or play characters that we are not use to seeing them play.

She's somewhat of an unrealistic prostitute, I'll agree. But I feel like maybe that's what they were going for. I like a lot of the characters, including hers. The main character was not her, it was the team of Keaton and Winkler.

I agree Winkler & Keaton were the main stars, but she was cute as well. But too pretty to be a street hooker! It's a funny 80's film, I like it alot.

I came here to say, well, exactly what Bolesroor's already said. (And imagine what what would happen if Howard was let loose on, say, an episode of The Sopranos). Nevertheless, I like the film in spite of itself.

I'm with the original poster on this one: she was not believable as a prostitute. There was a scene after she got her face beat on and she was saying something like, "No problem, 10 pounds of makeup, you'll never know." And I was thinking, yeah right! She looks more like a librarian than a hooker.

It was a comedy, what do you expect: Rosie Perez with a heroin needle sticking out of her arm???

"It was a comedy, what do you expect: Rosie Perez with a heroin needle sticking out of her arm???" - Hmm, didn't know if you were directing this to me or the person who started the thread - I know it's a comedy!

A Saint? Hmm, not if Saint's are supposed to be celebate! LOL~
Or were you just being coy?! ;-p

I dont think Saints have to be celibate. Thats priests. (And we wont go there, cuz we all pretty much know a LOT of priests are gettin "action" anyway!)

What city did NIGHT SHIFT take place in? Were they in New York, I forget.
Because I would think that hookers from different places look different. The hokkers in L A and New York must look different then the hookers in Ohio and Oklahoma and places like that. Am I right here? I really wouldnt know.

Hey, what do I know about Saints? I'm from the South! Haha - we don't have those down here! But a Saint that screws around? I tend to doubt it!

Julia Roberts WAS straight off the street..So what's your point :P
(...it's a really nice comedy that one...Wondering where the heck some here see lots of miscasts..Winkler is pretty good,so is Keaton,Long too,the script has some GEMS scattered all along the film(not just punchlines-how about the subway sax player gig...now THAT was original, had no dialogue spoken too!),and i really thing Howard did a NICE job filming "Night Shift"...)
So what? The movie is not really believable, but its still funny.
sharei thought the acting was solid, and the film was well done.
just because henry winkler played the fonz doesn't mean he shouldn't play other roles. i mean, the guy is a drama major. i guess that is what happens with typecasting. wonder why winkler had a hard time finding roles after "happy days". thankfully, ron howard was familiar with winkler.
shelley long played the "hooker with a heart of gold" role. i never spent any time with real life hookers, so i don't any experience to examine that profession correctly.
one year later, "trading places" was released. jamie lee curtis plays the "hooker with a heart of gold" in that film. so, what we can learn from this is that hollywood portrayed many hookers in a positive light.
i don't think anyone was miscast in this film.
You can watch a documentary and tell the difference between a hooker and shelley long's portrayal of one
there are even films that have actresses play hookers "in a positive light" as you say and its still believable
jamie lee curtis's portrayal of a hooker was much better
...actually...none of the actresses cast in this film seemed like prostitutes...
I agree, absolutely horrible casting for a prostitute.
