I think it's sad, and ironic in a way, that Marty Robbins' character ended up taking over for Clint Eastwood's character in the recording studio as Red was close to death, and Marty ended up passing away in real life before the film was released. He didn't look too well in the movie (I'm only saying that in hindsight; had he not died so soon after it was filmed I probably wouldn't have thought he looked any different)

The first time I saw this film, I knew who Marty Robbins was, but didn't know what he looked like, and didn't know he was in the film. But I distinctly remembering as I watched him take over for Red in the studio what a wonderful and beautifully modulated voice the singer had.
It is bad to drink Jobus rum. Very bad.share
That's one of the most touching moments in this film. Robbins had a posthumous hit with his recording of the titular song. Moreover, I tagged Robbins in a photo from this film on the IMDb; that's Robbins as Smokey on the left with a guitar sitting behind Clint Eastwood in the recording studio.
