Question

Even though Fitzcarraldo is dubbed in German, it was shot in English (you can plainly see Kinski, Cardinale, et. al. mouthing the words shown in the English subtitles). Does anyone know if a dialogue track was recorded at the time? I would LOVE to see the film with the actual actors' voices. And, hey... no need for subtitles!

Yes, an english audio version exists. The version I have ( part of a Herzog-Kinski 6-DVD Box) contains it along with Herzog's incredible words on how the movie was created. Even if you've already seen "Mein Liebster Feind" / "My Best Fiend", that audio track alone is worth buying it in my eyes!

Hmmm...
I rented the Fitzcarraldo DVD and played the English audio track. That does sound like Klaus Kinski's and Claudia Cardinale's voices (I have no point of reference for the others), even though it was obviously recorded and looped in at a later time. I can only assume that Herzog did not record an audio track during shooting... not that I can blame him, considering he had a hard enough time just getting the visuals.

I also saw 'My Best Fiend'... very hard to find for rent, but well worth the effort. I think it's Herzog's best work since Fitz.
