Why were the Indians working so hard for them again? Is it ever explained?

Why did they think they had to untie the boat to please the spirits?

Why exactly does he want to build an opera house in the jungle? Why not in his town or in some other city?

How will having a boat on the other river help them trade rubber, when the rapids don't let the boat get through anyway?

#1 They wanted to wanted to bring the boat over to... (see #2).

#2 As a kind of sacrifice to the spirits.

#3 Fitz wanted to bring culture to the jungle - and he was a little nuts :-)

#4 Supposedly they would be able to get rubber from previously inaccessible areas, I'm assuming from up-river - then bringing it over to the other river to bring to market (rather than via the rapids).
