Ice

Can anyone tell me how you store blocks of ice on a ship going up the Amazon for days on end without modern day appliances and equipment?

reply

Most likely it was kept well insulated so the ice would keep itself cold.

the movie explains that two kinds of salt are used to make a chemical reaction creating ice, though i'm not sure how plausible that is

I'm not really sure how it works either, but he didn't store the ice. We saw Chollo grinding the machine, at one point, that makes the ice, and then that fresh ice was given to the natives.

On a warm day we watch an ice cube melt in a matter of minutes. However, only the surface of a block of ice melts. When a large amount of ice is stored there is a large mass of ice at sub-zero temperature and a relatively small surface area. With good insulation a large amount of ice can be stored for a long time. See http://www.canalmuseum.org.uk/ice/iceimport.htm

In the 19th century ice was stored in underground "wells" throughout the summer with no form of refrigeration.

Early on, he showed a machine that used 2 ingredients to make the ice. I gather that he took the machine and the chemicals with him.
Actually, getting the boat up the mountain was a fantastic engineering feat. We don't appreciate that in our CGI world.
