an important question about the plot (contains spoilers!!)

The movie plot was excellent...but i have a small question which is troubling me and i wish someone could clear this up for me...

patrick redfern was abt to go to the island where arlena was lying, when myra gardener asked him if he cud take her along with him...they both reach the island around 12 when the gunshot is fired and they discover that arlena is dead...later on myra serves as alibi for patrick...
but how cud patrick have guessed that myra wud ask him to take her along?...apparently he seemed surprised when she asked him to take her...in his original plan to murder arlena, there was no myra coming with him..so who was he going to put as his allibi..what cud have been his original plan?? if there was no myra..then he wud have gone to that island alone and there wud be no one to serve as his alibi..i guess i made the question clear enough..

can someone please explain this to me?? or is it a possible plothole??

I figured he didn't have a good plan at this spot, but that it was somehow a "lucky chance".

In the book though...... spoiler.....

Well in the book, Patrick invites miss Brewster (not mrs. Gardener) to keep him company.

I always assumed Patrick would have brought along a witness if she hadn't offered. It is very chancy though. And he couldn't know she wouldn't have rushed up to the dead body to see for herself.

Why do you think he was strutting around in that skimpy bathing suit on the pier looking at the boat? He was waiting for Mrs. Gardner (or someone else) to come along.

I felt that Redfern made a point to be noticed leaving on the boat (the speedo would draw attention) and that would be his alibi if he had to immediately come back to get help. But yeah, it made more sense if he intentionally brought someone with him so that person could see the "dead" body, though what if Myra got off the boat and saw that it was Christine? Possibly could have been written better.
