Why did Patrick Redfern bring the diamond to the island ? If he went there to kill Arlena so she would not tell who stole it from her, why would he bring the real diamond(evidence he stole it from her) when he planned on killing her to protect himself.
Patrick dodn't steal the diamond from her... she let him borrow it so it could have it analysed. He just had no intention of giving it back and Arlena had no idea she was being conned. It was Arlena who BROUGHT the diamond with her... she gave it to Patrick after they arrived.
Thank you for the information. I must have watched that movie a dozen times and do not remember seeing that part. Was it mentioned or shown in the movie ? Anyway, thanks again,it sure clears up the puzzle.
Maybe I missed something . . . but I thought Arlena brought the diamond to the island herself, after having given Horace Blatt (who gave it to her in the first place as an intention to marry her) a paste copy. Patrick and his wife plotted to kill her to get their hands on the real diamond, which was in Arlena's possession.
In other words, I don't recall anything about Patrick Redfern stealing the diamond any time earlier. I thought Arlena decided to call off her engagement to Blatt, but then made a copy of the diamond to return to him, and kept the real one for herself.
It's not entirely clear whether Arlena was in on Patrick's scheme of copying the diamond. In any case, she either gave Redfern the diamond or he took it from her sometime BEFORE the story begins. My impression of the film is that Patrick Redern took the diamond and substituted a fake copy without Arlena knowing it. She seemed to truly not understand what was going on when Horace Blatt blew up at her about it on the beach. Once the deception was discovered, she had to be killed so that she could not connect it to him. The poor naive thing.
You didn't miss a thing. Patrick stole the diamond when he killed Arlena in the grotto. She had given the paste copy to Sir Horace Blatt prior to the start of the movie.
That's not correct. Patrick had the REAL diamond the whole time during the movie. Remember when Poirot found it in his pipe at the end of the film? The diamond that was in the grotto was the fake one that Horace Blatt through at her when he confronted her on the beach. Redfern either took or borrowed the diamond from Arlena sometime prior to the film. My guess is he just took it and substituted a paste copy. He knew that sooner or later the deception would be discovered and that it would revert back to him, so he had to kill off the only person capable of connecting the phony jewel to him.
Years back, when I'd seen this film 3 or 4 times already, I realized just how complicated it was, because I could NEVER remember or keep track of who did what when. Tonight, I think I finally managed it. Turns out, there's TWO inter-related mysteries in the film. One, the LOGISTICS how who, how and WHEN the murder took place. But the other, which somehow, I had NEVER really taken account of before, involved the murder victim, who was romanced into leaving a Broadway show after only 3 weeks by a man who gave her a fabulous diamond, but who BROKE the engagement after only 3 days but without returning the diamond. And after marrying someone else, had an AFFAIR with yet again someone else, who-- WAIT FOR IT-- STOLE the diamond and replaced it with a fake. This is what brought Poirot into it at the beginning of the film, and it was trying to COVER the robbery that caused the MURDER!!!
No wonder it's taken me THIS LONG to really, really "get it".
Does anyone know what sort of accent Patrick Redfern has? He sounds almost a bit Irish but there is never any reference to him being Irish so I'm not sure (sounds nice whatever it is!)

That's right. The point is not emphasized in the film, but Patrick and Arlena were already involved before the events on the island. (Remember that she booked the Redferns' room.) Poirot's explanation isn't very clear, but Patrick had either borrowed or stolen the diamond from Arlena earlier, had a copy made which he returned to her, keeping the real jewel. I agree with the earlier comment that bringing it to the island seems stupid, but there's probably an explanation for that, too.
