... its patronising scornful attitude towards the Balkans. For some reason the Balkans have never been regarded seriously by Western Europe: either it's a comical land of Ruritaniaesque regimes--such as Tyrannia, which is obviously Yugoslavia--, or else it's a dangerous jungle where violence occurs at the most unexpected moments for no particular reason. I still laugh at the panicked reaction of Russia, the USA and NATO when Yugoslavia started to come apart; from their alarmist reactions, you would think that history in the Balkans had gone back to 1914, and that WWI was starting all over again.

this view does exist, but in this film it was portrayed in such a way that only made the characters who expressed it look ridiculous. it was poking fun at them, not the balkans.

I thought they were referring to the Tyrrhenian sea.
