The most underrated film ever?

I'm a huge fan of EUTS since I first saw it like 15 years ago and I keep watching it over and over again. The acting, the script, the score, Maggie Smith and Sylvia Miles...everything rocks.I thought I was the only one to really like it(nobody around me even KNOW the movie!)until I came on this board.
Forget Murder on the Orient-Express and Death on the Nile...Evil under the Sun is one of the most underrated film ever.

You are so right. I watched it for the first time in a movie theater, ages ago. We were with about 10 people maybe. I bought the VHS, later the first DVD issue and after all the soundtrack on CD. Every once in a while, I watch the DVD again. For the music, the acting, the jokes within the story. It's just very funny, well done, but far, far away from anything we get to see these days. I just love it.

The direction is spectacular. Note the framing of each shot, the timing, the "look" of the movie.

You are so right on this point. It is truly underrated. It has such great atmosphere and energy. The characters are such caricatures of themselves that they're adorable. I recently read an article about Jane Birkin, the actress who played Christine Redfern in Vanity Fair magazine - she is very accomplished.

I have the book as well as the DVD and it's always on DirecTV at one time or another. And it's always as fresh as if watching it for the very first time.

I am a huge fan of this movie and almost every character. The only person I felt wasn't as good as the rest was Jane Birkin. Even the child actress, who played Linda Marshall, was so much more exuberant and expressive than poor Jane.
I never could understand her appeal.

I think she shows a "pouty" quality while I admit she is one of the weaker players. I adore the film butI had hoped that the reveal at the end would have been a touch more over-the-top: she could really have given it life. Well, she must have some great friends - Hermes named its "Birkin"bag for her and allegedly she helped with the design! LOL - who knows?

Saw it on television today and despite having it on DVD, watched it all the way through and loved every minute of it. It's a terrific film; beautiful to look at, outrageous costumes (Myra's outfits!!!), terrific cast and a snappy script. I think it is underrated but happily not by the people on this board!

Favourite lines;

Arlena "Oh my, I'm the last to arrive!"
Daphne "Have a sausage dear!"

Yes, Evil Under the Sun is a very good movie. Much better than that dreadful remake with David Suchet !

The film is good, but the Suchet version is closer to the original, apart from turning the girl into a boy, which is annoying and a bit pointless. he film is great fun though.

Wow, I'm so glad so many people love Evil Under the Sun as much as I do. It has always been in top 5 of my favorite movies of all time. Me too can't get enough of it. I can watch it over and over again and never be bored by it. The story, the acting, the one-liners, the costumes, the sets, ... and the great Cole Porter score! I really think Guy Hamilton is a genius! After all, he also directed one of the best Bond movies: Goldfinger. Pretty good for a guy who doesn't like Agatha Christie and James Bond.

I love it! Actually I find it even better than the book. Mostly because they made Myra and Odelle better charachters/suspects. Hadn't they made suspects of them in the film, it would have been a much more boring film.

Aaah, so nice to see others like this film -- it, along with Victor Victoria, are two of my definitions of perfect films -- and they make me think that everyone involved must have loved working on the film, too. My little head doesn't ever go "Well, I see what they were trying to do, too bad it doesn't quite work," or "Oh, I'll forgive that glaring oversight or bad acting or crappy whatever because the rest of the movie is pretty darn good." Nope. Pure delight from beginning to end, and it just gets better with each viewing. And I've viewed it many, many, many times.

i've been watching this film for as long as i can remember...and i'm only 25 now, it's one of those films i will watch every time it's on tv and when i had it on VHS i would often watch it once, rewind it and then watch it again...but no one else i know, aside of my family has even heard of it.

i've finally got it on Region 2 DVD and am looking forward to sitting down and watching it with proper DVD quality.

on a sidebar, was i the only one who couldn't stand the new tv version with David Suchet as Poirot. after the gorgeous setting of this film a manky island off the isle of white or cornwall or somewhere like that just didn't quite cut it...and no one can ever beat Maggie Smith's turn as the hotelier!

reply

I agree! I mean, David Suchet is fantastic, nothing wrong with him. I just didn't like the rest of the cast.

The Suchet version can't hold a candle to this one. For one thing, it should be titled "Evil Under The Clouds"! And for another, it wasted FAR too much time on the drug smuggling subplot instead of focusing on the main plot that matters.

To be fair, the Suchet series got MUCH better after that point (2002).

What a lovely way to put it! And, it's a pretty lovely film, that's true. Maggie Smith has made some of the most beautiful, fun films I have ever seen! She just came along at the right time... my favorite movie star, my favorite movies. And. she's so attractive in this! I don't care for her hair-do, but that skin, those eyes, that voice! What a ravishing woman!!

Please excuse typos/funny wording; I use speech-recognition that doesn't always recognize!
