I really did! She was hilariously wonderful! :D I loved the pairing between her character and Kenneth..if only they had got together instead! :D

(SPOILER ALERT) Maggie Smith is pitch perfect in this role. And did you notice that she actually gets it right the first time? Women fight like tigers indeed.

Poirot, Kenneth & Linda aren't shown leaving, and probably stayed to complete their vacations. Nobody's vacation was scheduled to end that day. The Marshalls, Redfern & Poirot had only arrived three days before, the day before the murder. Sir Horace had only arrived the day before (the day of the murder), and he wasn't really there to vacation - he was coming to meet Poirot to get his diamond back. The Gardners & Rex had been there before the others arrived, but we don't know when they had begun their stay.
When Poirot comes down for breakfast the day after the murder, Daphne mentions Sir Horace, Myra, Odell & Rex are leaving early because the place "is turning into a morgue" or something to that effect. She didn't say anything about Kenneth & Linda wanting nor planning to leave. Later, of course, we see Patrick and Christine are leaving as prisoners of the police.
While one may assume or even hope that Daphne and Kenneth do eventually get together, that's not necessarily the reason he's not leaving. Nor do they "get together at the end" - they're shown sitting in the same room with Linda and Poirot, but Kenneth's with Linda some distance apart from Daphne while she dotes on "Brave Monsieur Poirot!"

I love Maggie Smith because of this role.

Because of her, one of my fav characters from Harry Potter is Minerva McGonagall.

She may be playing a slightly over-the-top character, yet she makes her REAL: her feelings for Kenneth, her concern for Linda, etc, all come through.
shareCheck her out with Peter Ustinov again in an underrated comedy from the late 60s called Hot Millions. Written by Ustinov, they are both excellent in this hard-to-find gem.

Her bitchy remarks about Arlena are the best, especially the line about Arlena's ability to get her leg higher, and wider, than any other chorus girl! I also love it when she interrupts Diana Rigg's impromptu singing "You're the Top."
shareI love Maggie Smith. Period. Her timing is perfect. I think she was her best in Gosford Park. The way she stands out in an ensemble cast is incredible. I, personally don't care much about her Prof. McGonagall role in the HP series.

So wittily sarcastic. A kind-heated woman but bitchy tough -- she wasn't half as tough on her staff as she let on, but she kept that resort in top form. Old Marshell would enjoy his new gal, whether they decided to marry or not, and Daphne would smack the sulk out of Emily in a big hurry, and send her off into the world as a bold young woman of war years.
