'Hi, Mr. Bruhl'


Why does Clifford greet Sidney like that at the train station, as though they don't know each other very well? The scene isn't in the stage play, of course, and it seems like director Lumet is just using it to throw off the audience. So unfair! :)

I think that they greeted each other that way just in case there was someone else at the train station that might see them. If they greeted each other more intimately, that person could have potentially been a witness who had damaging information. They were just being extra careful.

It's been years since I've been in theater, but Clifford was probably just getting into character.

thats always made me wonder too, i think christopher reeve was saying it tongue in cheek know the ruse they were about to pull (it was a bit of trickery by the filmmakers though (-:)

I do like the idea that they were both "playing their parts" in case anyone was around.
