I dont get it. Why doesn't the sister stop him from kissing her that way on her bed, or atleast stop any "sex" from going on!? Was it some kind of mind control he had over her or something? Cant say she got caught up in the moment with her brother!
oh my gosh. my boyfriend and i were laying around hungover and could not BELEIVE how creepy the brother and sister stuff was from the get go. we thought she was his live-in girlfriend in the very first scene when they were moving in. ick! AND, how completely unsuited for each other were the husband and wife?!?!?!
Me too! I was only half watching the movie on AMC and half playing on the computer. And I thought that the focus was on Young and Alda (the older couple) and that the younger two were a young married couple. How terribly written. How terribly acted.
It seemed pretty obvious that she WANTED him to do it. Remember afterwards she was perfectly fine with what they'd done - in fact she wanted a rematch.
Actually, I think theres also some genetic reason. It's widely known that babies inherit genes from both parents. So if each of 2 children contribute the defective family gene, the baby is likely to be deformed.
She didn't stop him because she wanted the act and didn't care who with. She knew what she was doing was wrong and even says "he did it to hurt God" Knowing he was possessed and also knowing it was the deamon and not her brother she was knocking boots with.
The entire movie is unsettling but this scene is very out of place in the film
I disagree. Even though Sonny was possessed, that does not necesarily mean that she was'nt being influenced by the house. I think under normal circumstances she would not have let him touch her. I honestly don't know for sure.
Everyone bothered by that scene need to remember the negative influence of the house. I'm not saying she was possessed but she was a horny, confused teen. I think the house wanted her too, which is why it never let's her escape when she tries to break a window. I think the house wanted her purity. Her brother was possessed and he scared her a lot throughout the movie after he screws her. She is overly close to him because of the dynamic of the household. The overbearing, abusive father and passive mother.
Sonny was Trish's only confidant, and when he gets possessed she is confused by him. It's said offscreen that he did it to hurt God, but she tells the priest because she is really lost and upset. I think her character is only about 15 so I can see why she was a mess in that set up.
The priest is afraid of the house. When he sees Trish standing in the doorway (after her death)it's guilt, when he sees her in the attic instead of sonny or the demon, it's guilt again. That's why in that scene, Trish is painted like a whore. It's all the house people, and the family was severly dysfunctional long before it moved into that house. I doubt they were truly incestuous. It was the mean spirit of the house itself, to provoke pain and suffering.
I agree with you ,adrianmorgan_butterfly. The father was abusive to all of them and Sonny was the only one who ever did anything to stand up to him. Trish probably thought of him as her "knight in shining armor".
Most likely, she developed a crush on him even before they moved into the house becuase he was the only one protecting her. The power of the house just furthered the unnatural affection she had for him.
Part of dicotomy of the "attraction" of incest is that it's "forbidden", but it's also a case of a pair who already have a close relationship, so in one way it's "safer" with each other as there is no risk of "putting yourself out there" with someone you don't know. It's one way a girl can get all the sex she wants without developing a negative reputation (provided her brother doesn't spill the beans, which he likely won't since he will get blamed more for the forbidden relationship.
I have a younger sister who was supposedly really popular. I didn't see it at all, probably due to the fact that we were so different "philosophically" that I was too repulsed by her personality. (that still trumps looks in my book.) She also use way too much make-up for my taste, which added to the repulsion.

Are you saying that if she had a nicer personality and dropped the slutty look you would have considered it?
Also I don't buy it that one of the selling points of incest for a girl is that she can get all the sex she wants without tarnishing her reputation. I mean, how much sex can she have with her brother without their parents catching them?

I just thought that it was really weird how easy he was able to 'seduce' his sister. He says let's play a game of model and photographer and then it's "take off your nightgown." She thought all of two seconds and then said okay and whipped it off. No friggin' way any teenage girl is doing that in front of her brother.
Personaly, I don't know about the whole 'no friggen way a girl would do that infront of her brother'. I for one know personaly how easy a teenager girl will drop the cloths, late night game of truth or dare, or just hormone crazedness.
I don't know about the whole 'sister' thing, but it can't be that much different. But the whole thing was weird.

First of all, your personal experience does not mean that every teenage girl in the world is exactly the same. Second of all, some teenage girls might throw off their clothes without a second of hesitation but not for a family member. In the most places, the U.S. especially, incest is an extremely taboo thing. The majority of people are disgusted by it.

Yeeeah, I'd never seen the movie before and neither had my brother. (This was a few years ago I was in high school and he was in junior high.)
Imagine how our flesh creeped when we saw that scene! We both looked at each other like "Did they just do what I think they did? WTF?"
We were too grossed out to finish the movie. We got to the part where she says "Are you feeling guilty? Because I'm not." My little brother was like "Ew, damn!"
'cause she wanted him and there was no possesion on her part. just go back and watch their oh-so flirty moment in Sonny's new bedroom. FYI: it would've seriously ticked me off had the seduction scene Not been inclued!
This movie was inspired by the real life DeFeo case. They were a family that lived in that house untill the son upped and killed everybody with a shotgun. He later claimed that demons had told him to do it. (The Lutzes moved in soon after those events, in the first movie). Apparently, Ronnie DeFeo may have had an innappropriate relationship with his younger sister.
