A letter I got from the camera operator!

For those who are interested, a few years ago I wrote to Daniele Nannuzzi (the Italian camera operator in "Amityville II who did all those scary 'stalking' shots in the movie which really freaked me out) telling him how much I loved his work. He's a great guy who took the time to respond to my questions. This is his reply!

"Amytiville Possession" is still in my memories as one of my best work's as a camera operator. The movie was shoot in the traditional way with nice camera movements with dolly and dolly crane, but only for the point of view of the Devil: the Steadicam was exclusively used, fixing at the camera to provide a "floating movement"...but not human. The camera was always searching the characters, without being seen and the presence on the screen was very strong.

The steadicam was playing the Devil part and I felt like an actor!
To do this film, I learned to use Steadicam, which in that time was still unknown in Italy, taking lessons from Garret Brown in Philadelphia.
The idea of identify Steady with the Devil, was not on the script....it was (Director) Damiano's idea, but I think I have given a lot of suggestion in the realization of the same ones, daring impossible shots, like the flying camera on top of the boy up side down...

I have a very exciting memories of "Amityville", and I am very happy , that you, at a distance of years remember my work, so well!!

Interesting. I just watched this film again and that floating-over-upside-down gag really blew me away. Fantastic work.

That's awesome! The cinematography from this film is outstanding and still to this day memorable and not to mention haunting. Great use of the steadicam and composition.

Thanks for sharing the letter :)

I just came on here to post about the stalking scene thru the house. I absolutely loved it! I think it might be one of my fav horror scenes of all time. It was so fun and reminded me of The Evil Dead. It was superb! Good good stuff!
