I think it was supposed to end at that point originally. I was watching the spesh edition with the Kim Newman commentary who alluded to the fact the exorcism scene was imposed by the studio. Not sure how true it is tho.
shareI really liked the movie. But boy did it rip off he exorcist at the end. You are absolutely correct. Even the makeup looked like Regan.
