So this wasn't the DeFeo family, then?

Hi all, why didn't they give this family the last name of DeFeo? I thought it was supposed to be about them.

I'm pretty sure the filmmakers didn't use the last name DeFeo to avoid potential lawsuits. The film is very LOOSELY based on the events leading up to and including the murders. Everything else is pure fabrication. Pretty scary flick, though I do prefer the original film.

I noticed some differences in the stories too, like the fact that in the original, the bodies are brought out of the house at night in the pouring rain, but in Part 2 it's daylight and is not raining. Also, in the original, a big deal was made about it being 3:15 AM and in Part 2 it wasn't even mentioned. So I'm not even sure that this family in Part 2 is the one that lived there immediately before the Brolin / Margot Kidder family moved in. I also much prefer the original!

Another difference is that in the first movie, it showed a newspaper clipping with a picture of the one who killed his family before the Lutz clan moved into the house. It revealed that he looked just like George Lutz (James Brolin). Not only does Sonny Montelli look nothing like James Brolin in this film, but he doesn't even have a beard! I don't think the first movie ever mentioned the name of the previous family (DeFeo in reality, Montelli for the movie) that occupied the house, so who knows?

Oh, that's right! I forgot all about that. How weird that there wasn't more consistency between the original and the sequels. I have to look now and see if they had different script writers, directors, etc.

Scully...btw...LOVE that Edison quote!!!

Actually, I thought the same initially about Sonny looking nothing like George Lutz in the film...until I saw a crime scene photo in one of the films.
I forget which one now!
But the the photo was taken when Sonny was in jail (not when he was arrested, as the first film indicated) and damned if he didn't look like George Lutz! He had a beard even.

Hang on a second, so you're saying this is supposed to be another family where the exact same horrific tragedy happened?

reply

That's why I'm so puzzled about it. But to play Devil's advocate, maybe the house is forcing the same type of horrific tragedy to play out again, with different families. The house possesses various people in the exact same way, so surely those possessed people could commit the exact same style of crime.

reply

it really was just loosely based on the family and showing that they had problems. but i dont think it was really based that hard. Sonny is using a sony walkman in 1982, which the movie should have taken place before 1976 which means the walkman didnt exsist yet. Just saying...

reply

Oh, good catch about the Walkman! I didn't even notice that.

Hey Scully, The movie was listed as a PREQUEL to the Amityville Horror. DeFeos are not there yet.
