To be perfectly honest, I think that they both seemed interested in one another before the possession even took place. At least to me, they seemed a lot closer than your average siblings. The first time I watched the film, I actually thought Sonny was Trish's live-in boyfriend for a while because of how close they were. But obviously their family was a mess mostly due to their father being a colossal scumbag, so maybe they were so close because they went to one another for comfort. I don't really know for sure.

I suppose the writers want us to think the house/demon was affecting them all negatively in one way or another.
