OT: The honourable schoolboy SPOILERS
So i finally finished this, and whilst this is a discussion for the third part of the Karla trilogy. I thought there would be enough John 'le carre fans here for me to ask about the second part in the series.
The only thing i don't quite buy is Westerby's love for Lizzie, it just seems to come out of nowhere. One Minute he wheels a conversation between the two in front of kiu, that leaves her in distress. The next minute he's in Thailand and all he can think about is her. Westerby is portrayed as a man in his late 40's early fifties who has enough broken relationships to last him a life time.
Lizzie more importantly is not in the story long enough, sure she's by all accounts discribed as attractive but when westerby returns from Thailand she acts very cold towards him and distant. Thus for Westerby to Disobey his orders from Smiley to return to London and instead go to hong kong escape from Fawn and Guilliam and to meet his end on a beach at the hands of US intelligence when he pulls his gun out at the wrong time. So any thoughts on this? Or should I accept it as is. (Another thing what happens to lizzie, she ends up in MI6 custody but nothing after that).
Still otherwise a fantastic book good to see how smiley ended up from Head of the circus to very resigned and broken in Smileys people.
Still many thanks, If you can help.
