Strictly in the interests of research............. ....

In the scene where George Smiley goes to see Toby Esterhase at his gallery at what some people call the naughty end of Bond Street, the conversation takes place in a basement room where they will not be overheard. Smiley presses Toby as to the whereabouts of Claus Kretzschmar's night club, the Blaeu Diamant. After further obfuscation, Toby reveals its location reluctantly. (all this was in 1982).

Readers of these columns will be surprised and interested to learn that the resources of British Intelligence have been brought to bear upon this delicate subject, and I can reveal the present-day whereabouts of this delightful venue (unattributively, of course). However, I must stress that those amongst you of a nervous disposition should proceed NO FURTHER.

P.S. Once you have perused the contents, I will take a straw pole. Kaptn.Ahab wishes to make it known that she has absolutely no connection with the mythical Great White Whale whatsoever……

Claus Kretzschmar continues: "You English are poor these days - too many trade unions. You should enjoy yourself more.
Smiley: "Perhaps I should."
Claus Kretzschmar: "And how did you enjoy the show?"
Smiley: (diplomatically) "It was very artistic."

How right he was. But what of the up-to-date situation? Sad to say the site has been changed due to world-wide publicity. Too many computer "hits" but not enough action on the ground in Hamburg. Shame! Some of the girls are very pretty. And those tattoos!!!
But I digress. Der Blaue Diamant has a point. He runs a respectable business there. Let us be under no illusions………

Claus Kretzschmar again: "Make a good journey, Herr Max," with a slight Germanic bow, and at the foot of the card he has written for Smiley are printed the words, Google GeizHaus.
