Smiley was wrong (spoilers)
I just wanted to see if people agreed with something I just noticed. At some point Smiley said that Karla's fanaticism would be his downfall. But in the end it was Karla's humanity, not his fanaticism, which brought him down in wanting to help his daughter. If he was a fanatic to the cause of the USSR he would have let his daughter rot in a Russian loony bin.
This point may have been brought up explicitly in the books, but (although I have read all three) my knowledge of them is poor.
