Smiley's watch

In the scene where Smiley is "interviewing" Grigoriev at one point he removes his watch and places it face up on the desk. Was there a reason for this that I missed or was it a bit of "business" concocted by Guinness?

I know someone here will have the answer for me.

Doesn't Smiley at some point say "time is short, Councillor. Speak to the point." or words to that effect. Indeed Gregoriava would become alarmed if her husband was delayed too long. There then follows the amusing telephone conversation where Gregoriev snaps, "Don't speak to me of mushrooms, woman," and the interrogation continues.

I think this is what is indicated by Smiley removing his watch. It is a signal.
