excitement intoxicating...The scene by the car when he wants George to give him the "Green Light." And at the end when he is excited and George is not...nothing is going to ruin Toby's party! :)
Toby's just brilliant. Him and his lifelong love for mail vans. Really though, I adore how much he enjoys his job and in Smiley's People we really get to see Toby being Toby rather than Toby trying to be British.
The last hurrah. After desperately haveing tried talking Smiley out of it, he resigns and accepts his fate. In Switzerland, he's fully into it, and he loves it. He loves the action, and he loves being so good at what he does, and he loves being out playing the game once again. And he can't hide his joy, and it shows...
Of course, Toby’s fully in it. It’s a job he is good at and he loves the hunt. But he also knows how difficult and dangerous the business is – that is why he tries again and again to keep Smiley from it. But when he sees that George is determined to go on, he decides to use his talents to protect George and do what he can to ensure success.
Note that Esterhase ‘changes’ to Toby from being Signor Benati!
“You don’t buy a photograph from Otto Leipzig, and you don’t buy a Degas for Signor Benati (…..) If you want a Hungarian Babysitter some day – call me. If you go messin’round with creeps like Kirov and Leipzig you better have a creep like Toby to look after you…..You’re an old spy in a hurry. You used to say they were the worst” “So they are, Toby, They are”
