The PAL version has scenes that I never saw in the US television version I recorded many years ago...there is a scene in the PAL DVD that I do not understand...just before George leaves for Switzerland to burn the Diplomat, he burns the negative he found in the tree that was tossed by Vladimir...what is the point of this?
shareI think it's just Smiley cleaning up the traces. The negative was only a small fraction of the larger product (film, recordings, etc) of Otto Leipzig's blackmail operation against Kirov, and all of that material is with the Circus, where Vladimir had intended it to go. The negative serves no useful purpose, and, not being of a sentimental nature, Smiley destroyed it in the interest of good security.
