Gen. Vladimir makes his entrance......

There is a splendid image in SMILEY'S PEOPLE when Gen. Vladimir makes his first entrance, where he is shown striding down the pavement in front of the British Museum (accompanied by dog) while displayed on the railings is a poster advertising the Roman World under Caesar Augustus. But note the look of horror on the face of Augustus as he appears to view the scene of turmoil in the modern world - we are in the depths of the Cold War, after all.
