Mature audiences?

The Acorn Media DVD set says "recommended for mature audiences." Why is that? I haven't read the book, and the content guide here on IMDB is empty, so a little help would be appreciated.

I notice that BBFC rated the BBC "Tinker Tailor..." series as PG, but "Smiley's People" as 15. What makes it deserve the more restrictive rating?

Thanks.

In one episode there is a scene in a strip club in Hamburg. People appear in various stages of undress and suggestive poses.

In a later episode we see the body of a man who has clearly been beaten to death with great brutality.

It's all pretty tame stuff by today's standards. But no doubt it rated a caution to parents when it was released in 1982.

It means suitable for really old people!

Its that man again!!

No it doesn't. It means that you have to have more than two brain cells to follow the rather intricate plot. I'm disappointed in your response as you post here quite frequently. You MUST try harder. See me after school!

If you take a look at the most recent offering from the John le Carre stable (The Night Manager) you will see what a pig's ear youngsters make of the script. They have become so used to bland TV that they are unaware of how carefully you have to follow the plot. The result: total confusion. This is why it is recommended for mature audiences.
