Don't the Keatons seem like an atheist/agnostic family?
Being very strong liberals that makes sense.
I know Alex was conservative but not all conservatives are religious and Alex is NOT the church going type!

I'm just saying it makes perfect sense that they were at least not religious since religion was never mentioned even ONCE during the show!
I know there were Xmas episodes but most all shows have that and Xmas is a secular holiday where people exchange gifts.

Alex wasn't a bible-thumper conservative. An agnostic is somebody who is 'general religious, but does not believe in a specific organized religion'. It would fit Alex.
shareExactly pioneer! Alex was agnostic and the rest of the family was either atheist or also agnostic.
share[deleted]
You can believe in god but not be religious and even be an agnostic!
shareAgnostics are 'religious' in a vauge general sense--but don't believe any specific hard and fast specific doctorines.
shareRight and the Keatons were agnostic at the most. They certainly weren't bible thumpers!
share
Wrong. Agnostics are those who have no idea about any deity in general. You are referring to Deists. Many sitcoms stay away from it so its more plausible the writers simply didnt wish to devote a lot of time on the issue. As mentioned by others, they definitely had at least theists in the family and given some of the discussions, I would say at least non-denominational in a traditional mainstream christian sense. But, it was never pointed out to be a major theme on the show and the message of family and compassion was appealing to a diverse audience.
"How's the steak?" "It was poisoned (argh)...and a little rare" (collapses).
About Agnostics. I wish people would look words up at dictionary.com before telling everyone what they mean. One of the people who corrected you, also gave a weak definition.
Here's an accurate definition: An agnostic is someone who believes that it is not possible to know or prove that God exists.
I know exactly what an agnostic is, but I looked it up anyway, just to double-check.

The Keatons may have believed in god but weren't religious!
shareYou realize it's short walk from an agnostic to an atheist? For thousands of years man has talked about gods and goddesses but never has and never will be proof! "The bible says so" isn't proof!
share"I disagree with the person who thinks that the Keatons were atheists. They attended two funerals during the seven seasons and seemed sadded by both deaths."
Say what?! Are you actually implying that an atheist is incapable of feeling sadness at a funeral?
I know your comment was made long ago, MalloryandSkippy, but you have me puzzled.
In disagreeing that the family were atheists, you cite that "They attended two funerals and seemed sadded(sic) by both deaths" and add that "Steven goes to his father's grave."
What does any of that have to do with not being atheist?
What you wrote actually helps the argument that they were atheist. I mean the part about being sad. Religious people, believing in Heaven as an eternal reward, celebrate death because they think about that person now living in a wonderful place for eternity. While death is sad for the people left on earth who miss the deceased, it is a joyous time for the one who passed away and indeed something to celebrate.
Now I must add that anyone who loses a friend or relative to death does, naturally feel sad and I don't think any episode showing that emotion then indicates anything about that character's religious beliefs.
But if anything in those two sentences you wrote says anything about whether those characters were or weren't religious, it presents a good argument against them being religious.
One thing is clear from the question "Do you believe in God?" That is that they were definitely not church goers. That is, on the assumption that people who regularly attend church are definitely people who believe in God.
The bible is a VERY evil book that tells you beat and KILL children and murder innocent people! It's the devil's work!
Beat children
“Do not withhold discipline from a child; if you strike him with a rod, he will not die.” (Proverbs 23:13)
“For whom the Lord loves He chastens, and scourges [beats with a whip] every son whom He receives. If you endure chastening, God deals with you as with sons; for what son is there whom a father does not chasten?” (Hebrews 12:6-7)
“Whoever spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him is diligent to discipline him.” (Proverbs 13:24)
“The rod and reproof give wisdom, but a child left to himself brings shame to his mother.” (Proverbs 29:15)
“Folly is bound up in the heart of a child, but the rod of discipline drives it far from him.” (Proverbs 22:15)
Kill children
“He that smiteth his father, or his mother, shall be surely put to death.” (Exodus 21:15)
“He that curseth his father, or his mother, shall surely be put to death.” (Exodus 21:17)
“For every one that curseth his father or his mother shall be surely put to death: he hath cursed his father or his mother; his blood shall be upon him.” (Leviticus 20:9)
“God commanded, saying, Honour thy father and mother: and, He that curseth father or mother, let him die the death.” (Matthew 15:4)
“Happy shall he be that taketh and dasheth thy little ones against the stones.” (Psalm 137:9)
Kill Homosexuals
“If a man has sexual relations with a man as one does with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They are to be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads.” (Lev. 20:13)
Kill atheists, infidels and blasphemers
“If thy brother, the son of thy mother, or thy son, or thy daughter, or the wife of thy bosom, or thy friend, which is as thine own soul, entice thee secretly, saying, Let us go and serve other gods, which thou hast not known, thou, nor thy fathers; Namely, of the gods of the people which are round about you . . . Thou shalt not consent unto him, nor hearken unto him; neither shall thine eye pity him, neither shalt thou spare, neither shalt thou conceal him: But thou shalt surely kill him; thine hand shall be first upon him to put him to death, and afterwards the hand of all the people. And thou shalt stone him with stones, that he die.” (Deuteronomy 13:6-10)
“If a man or woman living among you in one of the towns the Lord gives you is found doing evil in the eyes of the Lord your God in violation of his covenant, and contrary to my command has worshiped other gods, bowing down to them or to the sun or the moon or the stars in the sky, and this has been brought to your attention, then you must investigate it thoroughly. If it is true and it has been proved that this detestable thing has been done in Israel, take the man or woman who has done this evil deed to your city gate and stone that person to death. . . . The hands of the witnesses must be the first in putting that person to death, and then the hands of all the people. You must purge the evil from among you.” (Deuteronomy 17:2-7)
“And they entered into a covenant to seek the Lord, the God of their fathers, with all their heart and with all their soul, but that whoever would not seek the Lord, the God of Israel, should be put to death, whether young or old, man or woman.” (2 Chronicles 15:12-13)
“And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying . . . he that blasphemeth the name of the LORD, he shall surely be put to death, and all the congregation shall certainly stone him.” (Leviticus 24:13-16)
Kill the CHILD of the blasphemer!
Because by this deed thou hast given great occasion to the enemies of the LORD to blaspheme, the child also that is born unto thee shall surely die . . . And the LORD struck the child that Uriah’s wife bare unto David, and it was very sick . . . And it came to pass on the seventh day, that the child died. (2 Samuel 12:14-18)
Subjugation of women
“Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee.” (Genesis 3:13-16)
“Wives, submit yourselves to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord.” (Colossians 3:18)
"Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body. Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in everything." (Ephesians 5:22-24)
Jesus NEVER existed! He is Judeo Christian MYTH!
Megafauna,
Do you realize that your long response to my post had absolutely nothing to do with the question on the board or with my comments responding to it?
I think you should go somewhere else to spread your message of hatred.
WRONG Flushing! It's the Christians who have the message of hatred and why even they admit their religion is dying in the west! Christians are the ONLY religion to murder people on EVERY continent simply because people wouldn't convert to their SCAM! Not a SINGLE historical character outside the bible verifies the NONSENSE in the bible!
I made that post on bible hatred because the Keatons would NEVER believe in such garbage!
Jesus NEVER existed! He is Judeo Christian MYTH!
I hope you get some counseling mega to control your anger. I'll pray for you.
Apparently you did not understand what I was writing. I'll make one more attempt.
The original post and my response had nothing to do with the merits of faith. It was simply a question about whether a fictional TV family could be thought of as religious or not. Someone mentioned a few scenes from the series and made an assumption that did not seem to go with the facts. I explained my position, stating facts, regarding what the previous responder had stated.
You come on with a hateful attack on all Christians citing all sorts of out-of-context excerpts from the Bible. Your latest response somehow makes the claim that Christians are the only religions who preach hatred. Aside from the obvious false assumption there, did you ever hear of radical Islams? Are you aware of the many Christians around the world who are tortured and murdered for their faith--today and throughout history?
With your outlook on all of Christianity, I guess our country, and most of the world must be an awful place to live or even visit. Personally, I have found most of the nicest people I ever met to be Christian.
Jesus loves you and wants to save you.
I belong to Jesus: my Lord, Savior, my eternity, my everything. I love you, Jesus!
Ahem. Atheists and agnostics attend funerals and seem sad. Just because people are evidence-based does not mean death does not sadden them. :)
An agnostic is someone who doesn't know if God exists

"It is absurd to presume that liberal = atheist/agnostic. There are lots of liberal christians and lots of liberal churches."
There are some of each...not close to a majority but the point was well taken.
"And Jesus, with his talk of helping each other, loving the neighbor, giving up riches, etc., would certainly be flagged as a liberal these days."
Lol..sorry. Statistically, conservatives give way more to charity both in time and money despite earning less. It appears with ideals of morality and giving nature, Jesus would be considered too far right nowadays :)

Parents are ex-revolted hippies and Alex is conservative, but mostly in a financial/commercial way. I agree religion does not seem to be a big part of the family. But in an early Thanksgiving episode, we see little Jennifer pray and ask God to make her parents more indulgent. There are several funerals during the show, with priests (sometimes a bit quirky) giving speeches. And in the "very special episode" from the fith season, Alex is asked if he believes in God and after a while of hesitation, replies he thinks he does "because you have to believe in something".
I'd say the Keatons' relatives are religious: thus, Jen prays with her maternal grandparents, and Mallory's great-aunt has a protestant funeral. But the parents and the kids are not so much, so yeah, they could be described as agnostics.

The longer a secular society exists the more religion dies off.
shareI know a lot of people who claim to be atheists/agnostics/deists/whatevers who are full of crap. They celebrate Christmas and go through the motions of being Christian.
I had a buddy who was a big time hippy. I was really shocked when I found out that he and his hippy wife celebrated Christmas. They were so anti-establishment and against rampant commercialism. But they celebrated Christmas their own way. They gave me a small gift they had made themselves. I wish I could remember what is was. It was a long time ago.
Actually, in last night's episode (on HUB), they Keatons were celebrating Christmas and were singing religious hymns. So I think they were Christian, but it wasn't emphasized constantly.
sharePeople in those days considered themselves more religious. I don't know why the writers would have written the Keaton family to be any different.

The thing is, since Steve & Elyse were hippie-ish, they'd be quite likely to have some religious or spiritual beliefs. I was a teenager in the 1960s, and one of the major aspects of the counterculture was a search for personally meaningful spiritual experience -- though not necessarily in traditional forms or belief systems. There were quite a few liberal & even radical clergy back then; and of course there was the whole exploration of Eastern mysticism. What the counterculture rejected wasn't so much genuine religious experience, as it was the hypocrisy they so often saw, e.g., so many adults going to church on Sunday & acting very non-Christian the rest of the week.

Steven and Elyse were super liberal so likely atheist/agnostic. Alex may have been slightly religious but even if he was nothing like a bible thumper!
Jesus NEVER existed! He is Judeo Christian MYTH!
During the Thanksgiving episode, Jennifer said a prayer.

I agree with you. Just watched the Christmas episode from Season 2 when Alex said something like, "Why do we celebrate Christmas anyway?" or something to that effect, and that didn't really ring true for me. I thought he was a conservative - and 80s conservatives were fun-lovin, Bible-thumpin' Christians, I thought. Even a nominally religious person wouldn't rail against celebrating Christmas...it was the 80s, a time before political correctness and the whole "holiday, winterfest" stuff of today.
There is more in you of good than you know, child of the kindly west
In "A, My Name Is Alex" Alex says that he does believe in God.
shareThey were never specific but they were a loving moderate family..and pretty well informed. To this end it a safe bet (given their ethnicity) they were likely some branch of Christianity.
