that they'd arrest really hot looking guys on the job, but would go out with fat, balding or unattractive men in their personal lives?

Not really. Because looks aren't important to either woman.

David and the guy Chris met in AA were nice-looking guys. Then again, I'm a straight male, so what do I know about good-looking men?

I don't find it ironic in the slightest. From what I can gather from DVD features and interviews about the show C&L aimed to maintain a realisitc view of life in the show's case within careers for women. In real life women do not necessarily go out with good looking men. Looking at it, for most of the series run Mary Beth and Harvey lived in an average apartment not the massive houses you tend to see on glossy TV shows The actualy arrest scenes were never really glamorous and sensational while the actual situations were never really far fetched (with the exception of a few episodes.) Therefore, Mary Beth and Christine's choice in men were very much in keeping with the sense of realism the show tried to maintain

Some atractive women will select "fat, balding or unattractive men" as husbands/mates because they know that other woman won't try to steal them away, and the fat, balding or unattractive man-husband/mate is so grateful for being married to a such a good-looking woman, he will never cheat on her. They are also good with the kids, and will more really pitch in on the "honey-do" list. These men are also easier for the the women to boss around and nag all the time.

John Karlen, who played "Harvey" was very sleek and rather attractive in his 20s and 30s, years before C&L, which acting job he won at age 48. Tyne Daly was slim and also very pretty in her youth, before playing "Mary Beth" starting when she was 38, IIRC.

However, for the first few years, anyway, JK and TD did a good job of looking like a married couple closely matched in age. I think the viewers were to assume that "Harvey" and "Mary Beth" were both in their late 30s, wed in their skinnier, more-attractive 20s, and were a couple committed to staying together even when they started to visibly age.

Actually, now they both appear even more close in age, though there's over a decade's age difference, because both have let their hair go silver and white, avoided plastic surgery, and put on weight.

I think it's neat that the characters aged naturally. I think silver hair can really be beautiful on both men and women. I esp. love the salt-and-pepper hair that Mary Beth, like many brunettes have. I'm glad they didn't try to keep them too young-looking forever. We have enough of an overglut of overly young-looking women on TV as it is and we need more older, gray-haired, heavier women on more TV shows and movies.

Somebody needs to alert Sharon Gless, then... She's had work done (caught coming out of the clinic by the paps), because she get calls to play different, less matronly types (even if the characters are moms) than Tyne Daly. At first it looked okay, but now her face starting to look too tight and pixie-ish, when compared to her neck and figure.

Really, who goes out with them then?

Being loaded with cha-ching helps too for them to rack up credit card debt, yet ironically we live in an unprecendented era where women can earn their own way in life. Mmmmmm.

Obviously you are threatened by women, but your terror based outrage is misdirected here. Check out Neil LaBute's board instead. You'll fit right in!

In the second season Cagney's boyfriend, Sgt. Dory McKenna was good looking. Unfortunately his cocaine habit helped destroy the relationship.

Yeah, Tyne and Sharon should have let themselves age naturally. And in a recent pic I saw of Tyne, she now looks rather different than Mary Beth...skinnier, much more tanned (tanning salon anyone?, and her face is unnaturally smooth. Mary Beth let herself age gracefully and has natural wrinkles. So does Chris and now both Chris and Mary Beth are gray in lovely ways. Aging doesn't have to be feared.

I read that Tyne Daly said women do get gray hair and it was natural. She was on Judging Amy at the time and she had no desire to look unnaturally youthful. I thought she looked wonderful just the way she was.

I wish I wasn't so vain. lol Just this morning I "did my roots" again. I have no desire to go gray.

reply

I saw that and was glad...I am glad Tyne came back to her senses and let the aging process continue...she's gotten more beautiful with age...I see Mary Beth looking very similar...heaver and grayer than Tyne, but still lovely.

Both Tyne and Mary Beth have just about the most beautiful faces I've ever seen in my life.

Mary Beth was with Harvey, who was average looking and a little heavy. Although John Karlen was trim and attractive in younger years, as was Tyne Daly. We were to believe that they were a couple truly in love, committed to each other, and not obsessed with having themselves or their partner be at an ideal weight.

Chris usually dated very handsome guys, Dori and David were very nice looking, so was the wheelchair bound guy she had a fling with. I am sure there were others as well. I do not remember one guy that Chris was with who was fat or balding or old.

Since I always saw Cagney and Lacey as lesbians, what difference does it make what the men looked like? They were just "beards" anyhow.

reply

No, both women were straight...they were straight, but not narrow (not homophobic). Why do you think Mary Beth and Harvey's marriage was so happy?

I smile, however when I watch Burnout when Mary Beth has her breakdown and is on the beach and Maggie is talking to her...I get the feeling Maggie was crushing on Mary Beth. Maggie was likely bi or a lesbian since she was attracted to Mary Beth.
