I don't think I know of a single comedy that is good from start to finish. That is why comedy is best left to TV shows because it is hard to be funny straight for longer than 30 minutes.

I will say this though Planes Trains and Automobiles was good from start to finish but that was half comedy, half drama.

There are plenty that are good start to finish, Ghostbusters, Trading Places, Dumb and Dumber, There's Something about Mary, The Hangover, to name a few.

It goes from being a comedy to an action movie and it contradicts its first half, making it seem the military is A-ok! But it does have one of the funniest lines that shouldn't be funny but is -- when they knock on the door and somebody asks who it is and they say, "Idi Amin!" Oh boy, I laugh at that every time!

The second half shows what the Underdogs can do. Granted they went WAY over the top with it., but I don't think it sucked at all.

Its the same format as Full Metal Jacket . More laughs though :p

You dont get how 80s comedies worked. You had to have a "feel good" section. And how this losers became the biggestz heroes of the US Army is simply .... funny. Thats also how Ghostbusters worked. But there nobody whined about the fact, that the second half is just hero built up. Back then people were adults and didnt need teenangst in comedies!

Sounds like ya'll just aren't that into army stuff. I loved the first and second half of the movie. They finally got out of training and were doing the real stuff. There had to be some seriousness added to it and I thought it worked fine.

It's a definite drop off.

the entire movie is lighthearted fair. the second half is about the lighthearted underdogs finding their manhood.

The problem with your analysis is that you're taking the first half seriously when in reality none of the recruits would have passed Sgt. Hulkelberger's training, but that's the joke. It's no more a joke than their squadron being assigned the stealth Winnebago mission, which in itself is stupid funny, but still funny nonetheless.
