this movie was an excellent recreation of the eruption (even though certain facts were misplaced). The scenes toward the end were real and very informative. A remake with special effects would be very good certainly considering that Mt. St. Helens could erupt at any time. Considering that the movie was made in 1981 I find it quite good. I would love a remake of this movie in 2008. Kurt Russel would be my recommendation for Jackson. I hope his real name would be used this time.
Wow, I'm actually surprised that someone watched this movie not even a month after I saw it. Between you and me, we both know there won't be a remake soon, however, who would u pick for Johnston's character?
It's tremendously unlikely anyone would do an actual remake of this movie. A new movie about the circumstances surrounding the eruption of Mt. St. Helens is more likely, but the fictionalized elements in this one don't exactly cry out to be remade (this mmovie isn't all that well-known, for one thing). I guess a new movie which has its own (new) fictionalized elements might be possible, but there still wouldn't be any need to call it a remake of this one (and likewise no need to pay for the rights to this screenplay, which would be necessary for a remake). As to using his real name--if they did a straight nonfiction treatment of the story, there's no reason why they couldn't. The 1981 film changed the name because it changed the story (the romance with Cassie Yates, plus most of the "townie" characters, were entirely fictional).
Well, in a way they did remake this movie. Try watching St Helens and afterwards, try popping in Dante's Peak. Same plot, extremely similar characters, and Excellent Special Effects.
