Missed opportunity

The story of Jack Read, should have made a great film. Unfortunately Beatties awfully affected performance and the fact that Keaton was in it at all means all you actually get is a well basted (hours and hours) turkey.

I know to some people it is not easy to understand such beauty. Maybe you would have liked something more Hollywood- like or from a right perspective?.

Bytheway, what ís the story of John Reed?, do yoú really know his story?
(all the way Eugene O'Neill`s "Strange Interlude"?) Or do you just don't like Beatty and Keaton?

reply

Not at all, as i said, the story of John Reed is a remarkable one. But this is a poor film.

reply

stop it, this movie is incredibly well made, and remarkably well written...

diane keaton happened to be a favorite of coppola, and woody allen, and their cinematic geniuses, where as your clearly just a misanthropic fan of any movie that is "hollywood"...

anyone who actually saw this movie had to be moved by how amazingly intense beatty's performance was, he clearly felt for the movement at the time and showed his immense interest in telling the story as honestly and brilliantly as possible...

go watch spiderman, or any vin diesel movie, leave the real films to those who can appreciate them...

reply

"Go watch Spiderman....Etc Etc"...Just so happens i have an MA in 20th Century Russian history and thats from the University of London not some tin-pot US school. I happen to be a bit of an expert on the life of John Reed and the film was a travesty. Perhaps if Vin Diesel looked more like your hero Beatty than you would enjoy "Fast and furious" more.....Leave History to those of us who know what they are talking about....Idiot.

-So you may have an MA and you realize that Reds is historical not correct, you don't know art. Art is the interpretation by the artist. Reds is an epic, brilliantly written and filmed, and if you aren't touched by it, it is hard for me to understand that there is ány art that will.

For all pictures, documentaries and films are interpretations of the real world by the artist. Look at "Lawrence of Arabia", I know all about T.E. Lawrence and as well that the epic is far from correct. But nevertheless I was touched by this film.

I studied the life of Reed a bit and I personally would have liked a bit more attention to the message, the ideas of Reed and his few poems aren't taken in consideration too. But, like I said, I think of it as a brilliant film which is one of the reasons I decided to do the filmacademy.

My apologies for my poor English, it's not my native language and it is bedtime. (yawn)

and don't call names

Good night.

I'm not sure who Jack Read is, but the movie most of us are discussing here is Reds, which is about John Reed.

Pehaps you should move to america and attend one of those "tin" schools for a while and help yourself to seem less foolish.

A bit of an expert... lol

reply

talk about nit-picking. it is true that "john reed" was his nom de plume, but i am sure you must have noticed that almost everyone in the movie addresses him as jack as do some of those who are talking about him. that is a pretty silly comment. if you want to question the supercilious english twit's opinion of the movie and why he does not like it perhaps you could say, "just what are your objections to the movie, both from a historical and from an artistic perspective?" i would love to have an opportunity to gain some insight about john reed from someone who was educated in london.

Agree. I myself also is a big fan of the film. I think it is one of the most brilliantly made film in history. I'm not a history major. I only know a little bit about the russian revolution, albeit very different views from different camps/people. I'd be interested to know your (shammy's) view/critique of the film. Is it the historical accuracy that is the problem?

reply

If you have an MA in Russian History don't you have better "ACADEMIC" things to do than call people names on a movie message board for no reason.

Take your superiority crap and stuff it.
