Anyone have much idea how the screenplay got written, ie what kind of interaction there was between Beatty and Griffiths?

I read a Griffiths interview years ago where he said that he regretted that his script,which he intended to point out the positive aspects of the original Bolshevik revolution became more of a love story and more negative about the revolution.
Griffiths was/is a leftist but he is more a Trotskite.
I don't know about the relations with Beatty but Beatty wanted to show that the word socialism was a big topic from 1900 till World war 2 in America.
