Movies

I'd probably say this is one of my top 5 favorite films of all time. I was wondering what kind of movies other fans of Pixote like. Perhaps I'll get some good suggestions. Personally I enjoy the films of Kubrick, Bergman, Herzog, Korine, Godard, Cassavetes, and Scorsese to name a few. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

While I don't think it would fall on any "Best of All Time" list, I really like it.

As a Brazilian I feel I can relate very intimately to the themes, and I could suggest you some other Brazilian movies that are perhaps even better than Pixote, but they are almost impossible to find, even here. (all the copies are 20-year-old video tapes).

But anyway, it reminds me why I hate this country so much, and how it dehumanizes all that live here.

madame sata its also about the poverty in brazil. most of the latin american countries have thousands of films like this. just naming a couple. "Juliana" from peru and "la virgen de los sicarios" from colombia. latin american countries tend to make neo realist movies kinda vittorio de sica. so you would find a lot of pixotes films.

It's a shame to see Korine listed in the middle of all those fantastic directors.

You don't make up for your sins in church. You do it on the streets...

Why can Americans never appreciate their own cinema? First it was the French cinephiles who got you to like your (early) studio films in the 50s and beyond. Woody Allen only survives because of the European market. Rosenbaum is pretty much the only American critic who gives Spike Lee the true amount of credit that he deserves.

Nobody in America likes Korine. He might not be a complete genius but he is very talented and gives hope for a better American cinema. As does Vincent Gallo. I doubt you like him either though.

I wont even mention Jerry Lewis.

Hey,
You've pretty much names the majority of my favorite directors, but you're missing two essential masters: Andrei Tarkovsky and Akira Kurosawa. If you're new to them, check out Stalker and Seven Samurai. Absolutely brilliant films.

Tarkovsky is the king.

Pixote is one of the best films I have ever seen. Not one of my personal favorites, but an amazing experience.
As far as directors go;
Sergio Leone
Stephen Frears
Stanley Kubrick
Martin Scorsese
Peter Bogdonavich
Werner Herzog
Reiner Werner Fassbinder

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I've seen City of God, Bad Education, and Los Olvidados. Also alot of Kurosawa.

I've never seen that Stalker movie though. Or anything by Glauber Rocha. Or Salaam Bay. I'll try to see them though.

Has anyone here ever seen a movie called Perros Callejeros? It's supposed to be amazing but i cant seem to find it anywhere.

Korine actually listed this as one of his top ten movies of all time in a Sight and Sound poll. So it's funny that you should mention him. Check out Kids if anyone likes this movie. It was written by Korine, and it shows that this film was a influence on him writing it. Also, for more movies like this, watch Spirit of the Beehive, George Washington, Ratcatcher, Kes, and Gummo.
