One genuine surprise

New Year’s Evil is a fun movie. It treads pretty familiar territory, but it does it well. There is one scene that is genuinely surprising. The killer has just killed one of the blond ladies, and the other one comes out of the liquor store looking for them. She finds one shoe, then another down the alley, then sees a piece of her friend’s dress sticking out of the dumpster. As she opens the dumpster we expect to see her friend’s body. Instead, we get a creepy shot of the killer, hiding in the dumpster, waiting to pull her in.

Movies like this are usually paint-by-number, so it was refreshing to see the filmmakers mix it up a bit in this scene.
