decent, worth a watch
first, i never knew crighton had directed something. i am impressed, michael. and not a shoddy job. kinda felt like early michael mann work, but that's probably because of the music (was it tangerine dream? i forgot to look) It definitely represents the early 80s feel, for anyone interested in that. i was there then, and i can say this one is right on target for hitting that 'style' niche on the timeline (1981)
some of the cuts were odd, clunky. i suspect crighton was at the mercy of who he had working with him, crew and stuff.
the writing/development was a little clunky. standard 80s TV expo, pacing. and some of the choices/movement were awkward. (like, why did a busy plastic surgeon take time off to go to the beach to watch a model play volley ball? doesn't make sense) a lot of the dialogue was too OTN and i began to wonder about the plausibility factor; too much spoon feeding. felt the writing was patronising at times, which surprises me from crighton. i wonder if it's b/c he was focusing on the directing more and thereby underdeveloped the script (like someone else i know is currently doing lol)
the stunt when the girl took a dive on the car was superb, excellent. they sure can't do that kind of quality work with cables and CGI these days..... i mean that stunt was incredible. (the good old days)
