I've not seen this film but I'm a huge Romero fan, is this the one where Tom Savini's character gets his head blown off in the car by a shotgun

Nope; this is not a horror movie. I'm also a big Romero fan, especially of his Dead films. "Knightriders" is a real change of pace; if you rent the DVD, the commentary track provides a lot of insights into what they were trying to do artistically.

Forgot to mention -- it does have Tom Savini in it (and also on the commentary track). He plays a major role, and does some decent acting -- his character is often in opposition to a young Ed Harris (in only his second movie), who shows his characteristic passion as Billy, AKA King William.
