Can someone explain the ending to me?

After Billy gives Morgan the crown, his girl runs off with the other knight... why? Billy then leaves the group, I'm assuming he would never had returned, why did he leave? that group is his life, surely he could remain with them, just not as king. Thanks.

He never wanted to be the hero, he never wanted to be the person that the people looked to. It goes back to his speech by the campfire, survival vs. ideals, if you die for your ideals then they will go on. At the start of the movie, he is the only one keeping the kingdom together. As soon as he realizes his ideals will go on he can be freed of that burden and chooses to leave.

Some ancient societies practised the sacrifice of kings. Billy riding off to die after he has been replaced references this.

The two were "making eyes" at each other the whole movie. Almost from the first seen you can see jealousy in the queen when she sees the new girl. She won't leave Sir William because she believes "the code". Alan won't go after the queen because of "the code". Once Morgan's group come to believe "the code" and come back the group is complete and Camelot is restored. Sir William's job is done. He rides off leaving his dream fulfilled and so Alan and the queen can be together in "honor".
