33 years ago today The Fox and the Hound came out. What a great movie! :)

Indeed. It's the last Disney movie that means anything to me.

I'll agree that this film was truly the end of an era at the Disney studios; not only was it the last time ANY of the original animators who date back to "Snow White" worked on a Disney feature; it was also the last before "The Black Cauldron" truly started a dark (however brief) period in Disney history... The bittersweet ending is made all the more poignant by this notion.

so you missed Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid and The Lion King? Rent them ASAP!!

Katzenberg-era Disney ceased to really affect me when I reached a certain age. Lion King became Hamlet minus everything interesting about Hamlet (and it goes without saying that The Lion King 1/2 was no Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead), and the other two had charm (albeit charm that was focus-grouped to the point of asphyxiation), but I can't help but feel that they foreshadow horrors to come (the Disney Princess marketing and all that jazz). Besides, I'll take Cocteau's Beast (or rather, BĂȘte) any day.

I suppose to each their own. The Little Mermaid and B&B are considered in the top ten animated classic of all time by every rating and poll system. They broke all box office records for animated films which shows a mass appeal never before seen prior to them. B&B was the only animated film to ever be nominated for Best Picture, which it deserved.
I love Fox & The Hound, but its songs are weak.
The Lion King isn't similar to Hamlet at all actually (In Hamlet, his father is dead before the play begins, there is no mother marrying the uncle, no Laertes, no deaths of almost everyone at the end). The Hamlet thing was just used in promotion.
The 90s gave us animated films that are all masterpieces in their own way-Mulan, Tarzan, Aladdin, etc).
Disney would be gone if it wasn't for Katzenberg era so at least give that devil his due!

Fox and the Hound appeals to me more for the story than the songs.
