Hahah, let's take a guess at why the killer decided to kill these people.. uh.. hmm.. okay, you know how they said some girl killed herself because she wasn't accepted in a sorority? Okay, she had a sex change, and now she's the killer in this film.
I'd say the killer is motiveless. This film takes a number of cues from Halloween, i.e. the hulking silent murderer in cover alls w/ a big ass knife, so I gather that like good ol' Mike Myers, the Final Exam murderer doesn't need a motive to slice through some teens.
Halloween at least gave us a background of who the killer was. Final Exam just has some guy killing kids on a college campus and then he dies. No motive, background, nothing. Thinking about it now, it's kind of appealing in an amusing way.
I like the fact that there was no motive or reason for why he kills. I much prefer this to the countless slasher films that gave us 5 minute explanations that ranged from abuse as a child to seeing mommy kissing Santa...most of the time these explanations were totally needless and often silly. Amidst all the slasher films that gave us the killer's end reveal as being a relative, someone seeking revenge, etc, it was nice to see a killer who has no connection at all to the victims he is killing.
There's an interview with the guy who played the killer on Hysteria Lives website. He said that with Radish's talk about killers on campuses "willed" or "called" the maniac. Cool, huh. He doesn't have a real motive but personally it doesn't bother me at all. The film kicks ass. One of the better slashers of the 1980s.
That's interesting, I'll have to check out the website. I just like the idea that he kills just to kill, no reason...just like the killer in Slumber Party Massacre.
Due to the horrifying nature of this film, no one will be admitted to the theatre.
I watched it again and perhaps the killer was the father of the girl who killed herself a few years back that was described by the blond girl. But of course its never even mentioned who he is
the point of movie is people wake up everyday and decide to kill people. a complete stranger could be a murderous psychopath. the nerdy kid (raddish) states this in the movie which gives the movie its central theme.
The fact that there was no motive is part of the charm to the film. In Halloween- there was a part where Michael Myers escaped, then when a doctor said "he cant drive a car" they didnt explain how he learned to drive. John Carpenter himself said that leaving you hanging as an audience was part of the "thrill". "What you don't know, is what makes it scary"...
