John Carpenter hates New York?
I heard that was his inspiration for making this movie, that he thinks NYC is a dump. Any reason in particular?

I don't think Carpenter had any ill will toward New York, but the city did have a reputation for being pretty rough back then. Crime was out of control, Times Square was a cesspit, it had quite the bad rep. This is all from what I've read on the matter; I've no first-hand experience on this.
But here's the gist:

Cleveland wasn't doing so hot back then, either. But between the two, if you're making a movie, NYC is much more iconic.

Cool, thanks for the link, Fusion. Very interesting.
New York may have been a dump but it certainly had a lot of atmosphere and character, a good place to set movies in like The Warriors, Ghostbusters etc.

"As part of Cleveland's urban renewal program, they dropped a nuclear bomb on the city. No one noticed." That's a good one.

Haha, that's pretty funny.
I once went on vacation to New York and thought it was a really cool place. Mind you, I bet living there is a totally different proposition.
