This film is timeless, and Snake is probably the creme de le creme of cinematic badasses. In my personal opinion. I'm also 17, and first saw this film at 15. No nostalgia glasses, just a love of movies, (only recently started avidly watching them, so don't use the mere 600 something movies in my ratings to say I know nothing about film. I'm no Quentin Tarantino. And yes, I still have to fully watch The Thing and They Live, but from everything I've seen, they're really enjoyable). Carpenter was like the Del Toro of the past, though much more iconic thanks to his otherworldly unique style and vision. I'd give anything to see him pull a George Miller. And no, I'm not talking about happy feet. :P
Quality wise and technically, EFNY is a terrific movie, though you don't have to personally love it like me, that's subjective, you can't say it's a stupid film.
Just curious, which optical disc do you prefer if any? Or do you just stream it. I'm only asking because there are issues with some of the transfers of Escape From New York that the fans have noticed. I prefer the HDNet Movies broadcast, which is also shown on BBC America. It's a very unique transfer in that it has just the right balance of contrast and brightness (not too dark, not too bright) and it features the original soundtrack even though it's presented in multi-channel (the film originally featured a two-channel mix). There are some changes to certain sound effects and music cues in the newer remix. The MGM Blu-ray has an issue with being too dark. The Shout Factory disc is boosted a little too bright which causes some problems as well, but with some adjustment to your display can look ok.
shareI don't actually have a disc of EFNY, just an old, beat up, VHS tape, (The quality is fine though, never had a problem.). I plan on getting a steelbook, (granted one exists), at some point, and haven't gotten around to a regular DVD yet because... well, guess I'm just lazy. :P
I have streamed the movie before, though I'm not sure where, a friend let me use their account, (probably itunes?).
I wouldn't be sure about the original soundtrack, since I've never heard another version. Sounds fine to me. (Gotta love that synth, though I still prefer Drive). Apologies if this post is a mess, been driving for a while and haven't got much sleep.
Understood. Carpenter synths rule. Drive had a good retro feel to it.
shareNot to mention how Carpenter just goes for broke in the last 10 minutes...
***SPOILERS AHEAD!***
I mean, he kills off almost every major character within a few minutes. Cabbie dies when they hit a mine. Then Brain steps on a mine. Maggie can't leave Brain and tries to shoot down the Duke only to get run over and die in a bloody mess.
The only ones to make it to the wall are Snake and the President.
Then the President gets over the wall and when Snake is being lifted, the President stops it and leaves Snake hanging there while he shoots down the Duke. I mean, Snake is the badass, but he doesn't even kill the Duke...the President does! With a machine gun! From on top of a wall!
The whole movie is just one long setup for the last 5 minutes of insanity when they make it to the bridge.
It's just a crazy way to end a film.
Loved it. And yes, I was born long before this movie was released and I remember seeing it in the theater although I only remember seeing it as an action film then in my mind as a kid. As an adult, I can get all the interplay and the themes and ideas being presented and it becomes a much more enjoyable film to me. Once I got old enough to really understand the movie. Not to mention, some life experience makes you empathize with the characters.
Great film. Still holds up.

My friend told me about the novel around 1980 and I read it in on sitting and knew it's be a great movie. While I never saw it during the theatrical run, it was on cable at 8:00 (remember when a "new" movie would come on at 8:00) and loved it.
Did anyone else read the movie tie in when you were too young to see it live?
Attitude.
That's it.
This movie has serious attitude.
It's a low-budget film that does what it sets out to do. It transports the audience to another place, keeps moving, and presents a variety of interesting characters.
If I had to choose between a glossy high-budget film that had no soul and made me feel nothing at all and a low-budget film that was rough around the edges yet made me believe in the characters and the world they inhabit, I'd go for the cheap-o film any day. And there are lots of examples out there: Taxi Driver, Phantasm II, Dark Star, Buckaroo Banzai, Time Bandits, Jacob's Ladder, Liquid Sky, Wizards, Class of 1984, The Warriors, ...

I love both your reply and your username.
shareI've always found it to be a little overrated as well. There's something dry, monotonous and joyless about it. Feels less ambitious and/or creative than some of John Carpenter's other movies. Still a good movie, but not the classic many consider it to be.
shareI feel the same way. I find it to be one of Carpenter's weakest films. It's downright boring at times and ends up leaving me feeling disappointed despite it having an awesome cast. Escape From L.A. is much better in my opinion.
What are words for when no one listens anymore
Well I did not particularly like it. Not my favorite of Genres and the production value was just so cheesy, could not help thinking of all those disaster movies like towering inferno.
