I've experienced sleep paralysis as well, and it is a possible explanation, if you discount all the times it happened to others, or others witnessing the event. Sleep paralysis wouldn't explain the son being attacked when trying to help her out of the couch. It wouldn't explain her boyfriend being attacked when trying to help her in the bed
Some might find me morally challenged or morally ambigious. I prefer morally creative.

The occurences depicted in the film (witnesses, windows shattering etc.) make it impossible for that to be the reason, though IMO it's very likely that sleep paralysis was the reason for the "true events" and the inspiration for the film.
