'Surreal' is just an excuse made by fans
This film didn't have a cohesive story.
shareIt had great visuals, but it was wildly inconsistent and damn near completely incomprehensible.
shareit's not really supposed to have a story in the full sense, it's more a collage of imagery aimed to create a mood. Fulci was trying to collapse the narrative, that's part of the point. A bit like David Lynch with inland empire. Though i usually like Lynch's films I thought Empire was terrible. The Beyond is certainly an odd movie though, and hard to watch all the way through, Zombie Flesh Eaters is more successful.
shareBut the thing is that when you watch a David Lynch film, you know what you're going to expect: I came into this knowing Fulci for Zombie (or Zombi 2 depending on where you're from), was "The Beyond" a fluke or was "Zombie" the fluke as far as Fulci films go?

This is different though: when David Lynch directs a surreal film you can tell because it looks like it's going to be "another surreal David Lynch" film, Fulci's "The Beyond" was advertised as being "another horror film with zombies", leading an unsuspecting viewer such as myself to go into it expecting a cohesive storyline and whatnot instead of "surreal terror".
Not to mention when David Lynch goes surreal it actually looks intentional and planned out whereas "The Beyond" just looks like it's either been chopped beyond a recognizable plot or there was no fully-developed plot to begin with.

It didnt have a traditional story. It had a cohesive story though. It could have been titled: Ignorant White People. Lol.
shareThe film was confusing and I didn't like it.
Someone mentioned Suspiria - the film has a plot and you understand it - I've never found myself asking WTF is going on with Suspiria and the other few of Dario's films that I have seen.
Yet a lot of Lucio's films are confusing, as if there wasn't really a decent plot there if any to begin with.
I find the visuals interesting, and as someone who producers short films however, I find its not enough. There needs to be a clearer plot, basic or not.
I like it how the original poster doesn't seem to know what surreal means.
Red Pepper Restaurant!
If you've ever seen any Lucio Fulci films, there are always a couple plotholes. But he still makes good, gory, low budget old school horror thats far superior than the modern torture porn crap/remakes/lame pg13 horror movies/cgi filled horror films that are popular today.
And yeah a few Dario Argento films have plotholes too like Inferno and Phenomena.
I'll admit The Beyond is far from perfect it definately has some flaws, but it has great cinematogrophy, cool effects (most of the time anyways), is a overall creepy ol skool horror film.

The Beyond does have a cohesive story, and no plot holes. Most people just don't take the time to watch movies carefully, Hollywood has conditioned us to be lazy.

shareim with you i have seen this movie many times the plot is ther you just have to look for it
you will have to forgive the lack of full stops lack of proper spelling im dyslexic but not stupid
Yes, it doesn't have a cohesive story, yes it's nonsensical, but it was meant to be like that, it was a sort of experiment, like Argento's Inferno.
