When Emily runs out...
At this point, about halfway through the film or so, Emily runs out of the building and our protagonist closes her eyes and retraces Emily's steps in her head about 5 times. What was the significance of this?

shareLiza realized that Emily ran out of the house without her dog and without bumping into anything...even though she's blind!
shareIt's that her footsteps make no sound - this has been discussed on these boards numerous times, it should be in the FAQ...

i remember i had posted about it as well. it did get cleared up but i still don't really like that scene. to me, it's bizarre, awkward, and sloppy, and should have been done better.
shareIf Fulci was American he probably would have simply had the character say out loud "Her footsteps made no sound!!?"
share'...it's bizarre, awkward, and sloppy, and should have been done better'Best scene in the film for me. It's an impressive abstract moment that shows that Fulci clearly had a range that extended beyond merely focusing in on special effects. share
wow, you stuck up for Fulci in an intelligent way.

I loved it too.
It should also be pointed out that the dog runs after her in only one of the shots - almost asthough even on the level of reflecting on a single action the world is unraveling and reality altering around the characters.

No way- I don;t buy the whole -she realized there was no sound and that she wasn't blind thing- this is a demeaning explanation.
When I saw this scene I realised that this film was unhinged and messing around with me- the horror is in the telling as well as the plot. It's exciting. But unlike when a comedian indulges in a joke that makes no sense just because it's a joke, this scene esculates the horror of the film- horror is not understanding.
Also I laughed when I saw it- so it's either *beep* and funny or weird and confusing- i like it both ways.
But for godsake let's not say that it was a character realizing something really simple- Fulci wasn't an idiot- he knows how to tell the audience that if he wanted to.
yes but my point was that the act is repeated and repeated with variation. He could have done it once but by doing it several times which are not simple repetitions he creates something rather more interesting

Agree, really creepy moment. I think it was a great way to tell the audience that she realized Emily didn't make any noise stumbling out from the house (into the mysterious mist!).
shareIn addition to the other comments, I believe she also didn't leave footprints, which she should've because it was raining.
