Argento rip-off, or homage?

In this film we have a dog, possessed evil spirits, turn on its owner and rip her throat out. The scene plays out in a very similar fashion to one in Argento's Suspiria.
I've always thought about this when seeing the film. Fulci and Argento are my two favorite Italian horror maestros, but I've never really seen any connection in their work. Does anyone have any idea if this scene was paying homage to Argento, or just blatantly ripping him off? It may have been a coincidence, though I really doubt it. Fulci MUST have seen Suspiria by 1980.

Maybe a rip-off. My aunt worked with Fulci in Murderock, she played Janice (the second murder victim, who dances in the nighclub) and she says that most of the time Fulci was trying to make in improvement over the initial idea of "Suspiria" (dance school murders) to make Dario Argento envious. I wouldn´t doubt if he ripped-off the dog scene to The Beyond.

Neither.

I'm certain Dardano Sacchetti & Fulci knew of Suspiria. (Fulci even compared The Beyond to Argento's Inferno.) But maybe they'd claim The Omen (with it's Demonic dogs) was more of an inspiration.

But anyway that scene features an Alsatian attacking a Zombie, not as memorable as Zombi 2's shark scene, but very cool nonetheless!

Im growing to like Fulci...his movies arent the "best" necessarily, but he has some really great effects and creeeeeepy atmosphere, and I give him credit for making some of the scariest zombies Ive ever seen, but I DO think that Fulci kinda rips off Argento and Romero here and there...I can go thru them all but I catch instances, scenes and dialogue very reminiscent of Romero and Argento that I KNOW were "inspired" or ripped. But, then again, imitation is the most sincere form of flattery, so I dont hold it against him. I enjoy all three directors for what they do. They all have a different style and all have made huge impact on horror film industry.

This movie is a rip off of Inferno...but actually the ripoff is better!

Argento and Fulci where friends in real life, the emnity was fake. Argento even helped Fulci out later in his life.
