With all due respect and being a huge fan of Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings adaptations, I think the best sword and sorcery film is Dragonslayer by far. The world described here is much more real, much more believable, and thus much more engaging. Besides, it has the most amazing mosnter ever to grace the silver screen. This dragon is scary, and I mean REAL scary. It has personality. It remains unsurpassed.
In the LOTR trilogy everything seemed a bit over the top and tongue in cheek while here the natural scenary of the Highlands, its inhabitants and the dragon all seemed real to me. There was never a doubt. I could feel this world of Urland as if had been real sometime.
And it was not a three hour movie, it had not any comic relief, it had not a load of close ups, it had not an over-use of CGI, it had not action for the sake of action stuff and it didn't show the monster in full the whole time (but when it does, the payoff is worth the wait).
To sum it up, this film belongs to a time, where you didn't go to a McDonalds to buy your Frodo Big Mac.
It's good that it remains virtually unnoticed and forgotten for the general public. This way we can appreciate this gem a whole lot more.

Merlin of the Crystal Cave? A movie I've never even heard of is rated higher than Excalibur and Conan the Barbarian? Only 13 peope have voted on it, so I'm guessing they were all actually in the cast and crew. All these ratings have no meaning.

reply

No, if there are only 13 ratings, it means cult members were here. Apparently, 2,000 more people voted in the last three months....? :P

"Frodo Big Mac?" I want one! And a Frozen Frodo for dessert.

reply

Well, it's good to see _Quest of the Delta Knights_ getting its props outside of MST3K....

reply

What kind of search did you use to find all those movies?
Thanks

I'm sorry but I can never agree with IMDB's own rating system.. it seems flocked with fanboys and not realistic at all.. when the Godfather and the Shawshank Redemption are #1 and #2

And with LOTR: Return of the King gracing the top 10 (think it's #4) the rating system is just well.. garbage IMHO (use it as some thing to guide by but not some thing to live by)

Also this list of fantasy movies isn't too accurate again IMHO
