'Controversial' score?
In the 'user comments' section, one person uses the word "controversial" to describe the score for this film. Can anyone tell me why it would be considered controversial?

sharePerhaps because it's nowhere to be found. I wish a complete score of this film would be released.
shareMight also be because it was a rather 'not so bright' person trying to use a big word that he/she didn't know the meaning of? Example:
*This food tastes tastes very conversational**
or
*When i was writing my hands started to become very flammable*
or
*I think that this movie is contraceptive!*
I would say "controversial" because of the short shrift it was given, both by Disney and later the record companies, as well as it's origins prior to the film.
Despite being nominated for an Academy Award, the score was never commercially released except in extremely hard to find limited editions (one of which even offered actual pages of the score!).
These CD's command top dollar when they come up for sale on E-Bay.
In the film itself the score is effectively buried beneath dialogue and sound effects, so that -even in Dolby stereo- it is effectively inaudible most of the time.
Many of North's best "flying music" was lost when the extended scenes of the dragon flying were cut out and re-dubbed with other music from elsewhere in the score, or left without music.
Finally, large portions of the score were originally written for 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY, but never used (LONG story there).
North re-cycled a major portion of the 2001 score into his score for SHOES OF THE FISHERMAN as well as into several of his subsequent concert works.
Hope that helps.

I know it's almost 6 years later, but just wanted to thank you for your excellent answer.

The score for Dragonslayer was released back in 2010 by La La Land Records, I own it. They usually have it on Amazon.com, see the link below.
